What is the Magnetic Polydron Platonic Solids Set?

The Magnetic Polydron Platonic Solids Set (code 50-5056) is a 50-piece magnetic geometry kit from Polydron for children aged 3 and over. It contains 6 squares, 32 equilateral triangles and 12 pentagons, which together let children build and explore the five Platonic solids. All pieces are magnetic and made from 70% recycled plastic.

Which shapes can you build with the Platonic Solids Set?

The five Platonic solids are the tetrahedron, cube, octahedron, dodecahedron and icosahedron. With this set, children use the 6 squares for a cube, the 12 pentagons for a dodecahedron and the 32 equilateral triangles for the shapes made only of triangles. The open frame pieces allow children to see inside each model. Polydron describes it as a student set that young children can investigate and older children can use for more advanced constructions. Each square measures 6 x 6 cm.

For schools

  • Supports 3D shape work across KS1 and KS2, including faces, edges and vertices.
  • Gives KS3 pupils a hands-on way to study regular polyhedra and their properties.
  • Open frames let a group see inside a model during whole-class discussion.
  • A concrete resource for Quality First Teaching and SEND provision.
  • Recyclable carton for storage, with a free model guide available from Polydron.

For parents and home use

  • Magnetic pieces make building 3D shapes quick and satisfying at home.
  • Children can build all five Platonic solids from one 50-piece set.
  • Connecting pieces gives regular fine motor practice.
  • Young children can explore freely, while older children take on more complex builds.

Supporting learners with SEND and learning differences

Hands-on magnetic construction can help learners with SEND and learning differences understand 3D shapes that are hard to picture from a drawing. Children can hold a model, count its faces and look inside through the open frames. The magnets connect easily and give instant feedback, and building the same solid again helps ideas stick. Learners can work at their own pace.

The Magnetic Polydron Platonic Solids Set is available to order from The Dyslexia Shop, a UK specialist in resources for SEND and learning differences, for classrooms and homes.
