What is the Original Polydron Sphera Class Set?

The Original Polydron Sphera Class Set (code SP-3003) is a 196-piece construction kit from Polydron for building curved 3D shapes with a whole class. It is suitable for children aged 8 and over. The set contains 36 sphere pieces, 72 quadrant pieces, 16 cone pieces, 12 cylinder pieces, 20 squares and 40 right angle triangles, plus an Exploring Sphera activity booklet.

What can a class build with Polydron Sphera?

Polydron Sphera lets children create their own spheres, cylinders and cones. Polydron describes the Class Set as a set to build over 16 different spherical models together, designed for large groups of children. Polydron also presents it as a resource for teaching 3D shapes to KS2 children. The pieces come in 4 colours, and a free Sphera Assembly Guide is available to download from Polydron.

For schools

  • Supports KS2 and KS3 maths on 3D shape, including curved surfaces, faces, edges and vertices.
  • 196 pieces let a large group build over 16 spherical models at the same time.
  • Concrete models support Quality First Teaching before pictorial and abstract work.
  • Dishwasher safe at 70°C, so shared pieces are simple to keep clean.
  • Useful in SEND provision, intervention groups and maths clubs.

For parents and home use

  • Suits home educators, tutors or families who want enough pieces for several children.
  • Joining the pieces gives regular fine motor practice.
  • The Exploring Sphera booklet gives adults ready-made activities.
  • Open-ended building lets children design their own curved models.

Supporting learners with SEND and learning differences

Hands-on construction helps many learners with SEND and learning differences understand maths ideas that can feel abstract on paper. Curved shapes such as spheres and cones are hard to draw and picture, but a Sphera model can be held, turned and taken apart. The 4 colours give clear visual cues, and joining pieces builds fine motor control. Building the same shape several times with a partner gives useful repetition.

The Original Polydron Sphera Class Set is available to order from The Dyslexia Shop, a UK specialist in resources for SEND and learning differences, for use in school or at home.
