What is the Translucent Solid Magnetic Polydron Starter Set?

The Translucent Solid Magnetic Polydron Starter Set (code 50-9000T) is a 24-piece magnetic construction kit from Polydron for children aged 3 and over. It contains 12 squares and 12 equilateral triangles, plus a model guide. Polydron designed it for small groups of children learning to build their first 2D and 3D shapes.

What can children build with the Starter Set?

Children can join the 24 magnetic pieces to make flat patterns, then fold them into simple 3D solids such as cubes, pyramids and prisms. Each square measures 6 x 6 cm. The pieces come in six translucent colours, so light passes through them and colours mix where pieces overlap. Colour coding helps children learn about polarity, and the set is compatible with Magnetic Polydron, so more pieces can be added later.

For schools

• Sized for small group work in nursery, reception and KS1.
• Shows how 2D nets fold into 3D solids, supporting early maths on shape and space.
• Gives a concrete first step for Quality First Teaching before pictorial work.
• Suits SEND provision and one-to-one or small intervention sessions.
• Can be sterilised with an alcohol-based sanitiser between groups.

For parents and home use

• A manageable first set for children starting to build shapes at home.
• Translucent pieces invite play with light on a window or light panel.
• Magnetic edges join easily, which helps young children feel successful.
• Handling pieces supports fine motor skills and hand control.
• Suitable from age 3 with adult supervision, as the pieces contain magnets.

Supporting learners with SEND and learning differences

Hands-on construction helps many learners with SEND and learning differences understand shape through touch and sight. With 24 pieces, the Translucent Solid Magnetic Polydron Starter Set keeps choices manageable, and the magnets guide each piece into place. The translucent colours give strong visual interest, and folding a flat net into a cube makes an abstract idea concrete and repeatable.

The Translucent Solid Magnetic Polydron Starter Set is available to order from The Dyslexia Shop, a UK specialist in resources for SEND and learning differences, for home, nursery and school use.
