The Translucent Magnetic Polydron Exploration Set (code 50-3050) is a 100-piece magnetic shape construction kit from Polydron for children aged 3 and over. It contains 40 equilateral triangles, 12 right-angle triangles, 8 isosceles triangles, 24 squares, 4 rectangles and 12 pentagons. All pieces are magnetic, and the open frame design lets children see inside the shapes they build.
Polydron says the set will allow children to open up their imaginations. With six shapes and 100 pieces, children can build cubes, pyramids, prisms, arches and pentagon-based solids. The squares measure 6 x 6 cm. Pieces are made from engineering grade MABS, which Polydron describes as extremely durable, and a model guide can be downloaded from the Polydron website for extra ideas.
Hands-on construction helps many learners with SEND and learning differences understand shape ideas that can feel abstract on a worksheet. Children can hold a pentagon, count its sides and see how several pieces form a solid. The open frame pieces make the inside of a shape visible, which supports visual understanding. Placing pieces edge to edge also builds fine motor control, and tasks can be repeated as often as needed.
The Translucent Magnetic Polydron Exploration Set is available to order from The Dyslexia Shop, a UK specialist in resources for SEND and learning differences, for the classroom, nursery or home.
