What is the Magnetic Polydron Add-On Wheels Set?

The Magnetic Polydron Add-On Wheels Set (code 50-1065) is an 8-piece add-on pack from Polydron for children aged 3 and over. It contains 4 wheels and 4 hubs. The set is designed to be used with other Magnetic Polydron sets, turning flat and solid shape builds into vehicles that roll. It is made from 33% recycled plastic and comes in a sturdy, reusable and recyclable carton.

How does the Add-On Wheels Set help children learn?

Polydron describes this set as a way to "create your own moving vehicles" and "explore push and pull". Children attach the 4 hubs and 4 wheels to a Magnetic Polydron base, then test how far and how fast their model travels. Each square hub measures 6 x 6 cm, matching the size of standard Magnetic Polydron squares, so the pieces sit neatly alongside an existing collection. Because the wheels are an add-on, children need at least one other Magnetic Polydron set to build a complete vehicle.

For schools

  • Adds a moving element to Magnetic Polydron sets already used in EYFS and KS1 classrooms.
  • Supports early science talk about pushing, pulling and how things move.
  • Gives small groups a shared design challenge, such as building a vehicle that carries a load.
  • Offers a hands-on, practical activity that suits SEND provision and Quality First Teaching.
  • Pieces can be cleaned with an alcohol-based sanitiser between sessions.

For parents and home use

  • Extends a Magnetic Polydron set you already own with 8 extra pieces.
  • Encourages open-ended play as children design, test and rebuild their own vehicles.
  • Fitting hubs and wheels to a model gives useful fine motor practice.
  • Suitable from age 3, with adult supervision because the pieces contain magnets.

Supporting learners with SEND and learning differences

Hands-on construction gives many learners with SEND and learning differences a concrete way to explore ideas. Building a vehicle and watching it move links an action to a visible result, which can make cause and effect easier to understand. Joining hubs and wheels to magnetic shapes builds fine motor control, and the clear, simple pieces keep the task manageable. Adults can start with a single vehicle and add challenge step by step.

The Magnetic Polydron Add-On Wheels Set is available to order from The Dyslexia Shop, a UK specialist in resources for SEND and learning differences, to extend your Magnetic Polydron collection at school or at home.
