Peter Spier’s Noah’s Ark tells the familiar Bible story largely through pictures, and it won the Caldecott Medal in 1978. What we like is that he considers what sharing a boat with all those animals might actually involve, from keeping just two bees to Noah’s wife climbing onto a crate to escape the rats. The flood is frightening, but these everyday troubles bring humor to the story and give children something to follow within the larger scenes. By the time the animals leave the ark and their babies arrive in spring, you’ve seen both the work of keeping them alive and the happiness of starting again.
