According to the traditional animist beliefs of the Dayak people—known as Kaharingan—hampatong carvings are far more than decorative objects. They serve as spiritual anchors and vessels for ancestral spirits, created to protect communities, longhouses, and fields by warding off malevolent forces, disease, and misfortune.
Historically positioned at critical thresholds—village gateways, riverbanks, longhouse entrances, and agricultural boundaries—these monumental posts were believed to ensure safe passage and abundant harvests.
Hand-carved from a single piece of dense Bornean ironwood (ulin), authentic hampatong pieces endure decades of tropical weathering. This exposure creates their distinctive deeply patinated surface, natural cracking, and weathered texture—markers of genuine age and spiritual potency.
Each piece is priced and sold separately.
