Most tongs are built to grab. These are built to handle.
The tips are rounded and smooth, so an egg, a meatball, or a boiled potato comes out of the pot the same shape it went in. One side is slotted. Fat and water drain back into the pan instead of onto the plate. The other side is a shallow scoop that holds about a tablespoon, enough to move pasta water into a sauce or spoon drippings back over a chicken thigh.
There is no spring and no hinge. One piece of Japanese stainless steel, holding its own tension. Nothing to fatigue, nothing to loosen, nothing to trap food in a joint.
At 10 inches your hand stays clear of the heat, and you still have the control to plate with them. They work at the stove and they work at the table.
Do they lock or collapse?
No. There is no spring, hinge, or lock. They lie flat in a drawer.
What is the scoop side actually for?
About a tablespoon. Pasta water into a sauce, drippings back over the meat, a little brine out of the jar.
Will they mark a nonstick pan?
The tips are smooth and rounded, but they are steel. Best on cast iron, carbon steel, and stainless.
Are they dishwasher safe?
Yes.
Are these the same as fingertip tongs?
No. Aux makes several shapes. The Gassiri is the rounded, dual-function pair meant for round food and hot liquid, not the fine fingertip style used for plating.
These live in the same drawer as your knives. When those knives stop feeling right, send them in. About a week, door to door.
