Anachrony: Essential Edition is a medium‑heavy worker‑placement and engine‑building game for 2–4 players set in a dystopian 26th‑century future where rival factions use time travel to prepare for an impending cataclysm. Players recruit different classes of workers, construct buildings and superprojects, and “borrow” resources from the future via time rifts to gain powerful short‑term boosts at long‑term risk. This Essential Edition includes the base game content with updated art but excludes the expansion modules and exosuit miniatures, offering the core experience in a more affordable package.

Key details:

Players: 2–4 (some retailers list updated solo support via expansions, but Essential core box is 2–4).
Age: 15+.
Playing time: roughly 60–120 minutes, depending on player count and familiarity.
Complexity: advanced / “hard game,” aimed at experienced gamers.

Main features and gameplay

Anachrony uses a distinctive two‑tier worker‑placement system in which workers are stationed on your personal player board and must be sent out in powered exosuits to access key spaces in the Capital and the devastated world outside. Workers come in specialized types (such as engineers, scientists, and administrators), each better suited to certain actions, which creates a rich puzzle around where and when to assign them.

Time travel is central: at the start of an era, you can request resources, workers, or even exosuits from your future self, with the understanding that later you must send those assets back along the timeline or risk paradoxes and anomalies that clog your board and cost points. During the game a meteor impact (the cataclysm) occurs in the mid game, drastically changing the board and triggering a race to evacuate the Capital, giving each faction unique evacuation scoring objectives to pursue.

Components included (Essential Edition)

Different stores list slightly varied phrasing, but they agree that Essential Edition is the base game only, with cardboard standees instead of plastic exosuit miniatures. Typical contents include:

Main board, timeline boards, and faction (Path) player boards.
Worker tokens in multiple classes and resource tokens (water, materials, energy sources, etc.).
Building and superproject tiles, anomaly tiles, various cards, dice, and markers needed for time travel, paradoxes, and scoring.
The separate Exosuit Miniatures Set and Classic Expansions box (for modules like Doomsday, Pioneers, etc.) are sold separately and not part of Essential Edition.
