Ons Stoopke, J. Fryns, Hasselt, dating from 1920, is an anonymous Belgian beverage poster built around an irrepressibly cheerful mascot. Dressed in a brilliant red jacket, voluminous trousers and oversized wooden shoes, he raises a glass in one hand while carrying a bottle in the other. Bright yellow, green and orange, sharpened by touches of blue and heavy black outlines, give the design the immediate visibility required of commercial display.

The name J. Fryns connects the poster with Hasselt, a Belgian city closely associated with the production of jenever and other distilled drinks. During the early twentieth century, advertising increasingly relied upon memorable characters, condensed lettering and emphatic blocks of colour to establish brands at a glance. Here, local identity is communicated not through a view of the city but through a folkloric figure whose costume, convivial expression and drinking vessels turn the product into a miniature theatrical performance.

A closer look

The character occupies the centre of the tall composition, his rounded silhouette standing forcefully against a background that shifts from luminous yellow towards cooler blue. His broad trousers are articulated with just enough folding to suggest movement, while the broad wooden shoes anchor an otherwise buoyant figure. Bottle and glass extend to either side, creating a balanced pose and making the advertised beverage inseparable from the mascot’s jovial presence.

Across the middle, the words ‘ONS STOOPKE’ are set in bold lettering, functioning almost as a visual platform beneath the figure. Lower down, ‘J. Fryns & Cie’ and ‘STOKERS België’ identify the firm and its trade, while the prominent word ‘GEDEPONEERD’ signals the registered status of the name or design. The typography is not merely informational: changes of scale divide the poster into clear bands, allowing the eye to move rapidly from character to brand.

Decoration crowds the edges without obscuring this hierarchy. Intertwining leaves, clover-like forms and floral motifs gather around the upper border, echoed by a small central ornament above the figure. Near the lower corners, tiny musical notes add a further suggestion of sociability and good humour. A warm orange field intensifies the lower lettering, while the thick dark outer border contains the vivid palette like a signboard.

Context and significance

The poster belongs to a period when European commercial graphics were becoming increasingly direct. Rather than imitating a detailed painted scene, its anonymous designer uses flat colour, simplified contour and a single exaggerated figure to produce instant recognition. Minimal modelling keeps the forms crisp, yet small flourishes—the patterned borders, trouser folds and musical notation—prevent the design from becoming austere.

Its particular appeal lies in the meeting of regional character and modern advertising economy. The mascot may be playful and old-fashioned in dress, but the poster’s tightly controlled hierarchy is distinctly purposeful: figure, name and maker can each be read in quick succession. The result is both a lively document of Belgian beverage culture and a confident example of early twentieth-century brand imagery.
