Hexensalbe is a strange and compelling aromatic fragrance built around salty liquorice, bitter herbs and earthy woods.
Wormwood gives the opening a distinctly herbal edge, with the dark sweetness of liquorice running through the composition. Tuberose, rosemary and angelica add an aromatic floral character before patchouli, lichen and black hemlock create a deeper, earthier finish.
The name translates as “witches’ ointment”, referring to the hallucinogenic salves associated with European witchcraft during the Middle Ages. Made from mixtures of potent and often poisonous plants, these preparations were said to produce sensations of flight and vivid visions, experiences that became entwined with the enduring mythology of witches and flying broomsticks.
