How a Rydel-Seiffer style fork works

• Two frequencies in one fork. Rydel-Seiffer style forks have removable dampers (clamps) on the prongs. With the dampers fitted the fork vibrates at 64 Hz; with them removed it vibrates at 128 Hz.
• Graduated reading. On the classic Rydel-Seiffer design the dampers also carry a graduated scale, so the examiner can record a number for the point at which vibration is no longer felt, rather than only yes or no.
• How it is used in training. The fork is struck, then its base is placed on a bony point such as the joint of the big toe, and the person being examined says when they stop feeling the vibration.
