Quercus palustris - Pin Oak Seedlings Details

Pin oak (Quercus palustris) is one of the fastest-growing native oaks in North America, and its seedlings get off to a quick start. Full-grown pin oaks are loved for their red to bronze fall color, strong adaptability, and exceptional benefits for wildlife. Planted for shade, habitat restoration, or timber, they grow into strong trees that do well where many other hardwoods struggle.

Quercus palustris Seedlings: For Wetlands and Erosion Control

Pin oaks are unique among oak species in that they tolerate poorly drained and compacted soils and can even survive occasional flooding. Just make sure your soil is acidic, because in alkaline soil the leaves turn yellow and the seedlings struggle. Planted near creeks and river bottoms, pin oak seedlings are excellent at stabilizing soil where erosion is a concern and heavy clay soil is common. On the other hand, they are equally good at thriving in drier urban landscapes and are loved by park and urban forestry managers and urban planners for their ability to perform well in polluted areas with poor soil.

Excellent For Planting Wildlife Habitat

Pin oak (Quercus palustris) seedlings are an excellent choice for many types of landscape projects, including wildlife habitat enrichment, attracting deer and wild turkeys, soil stabilization, reforestation, parks and recreation, conservation forestry, and serving as a natural windbreak.

Pin oak seedlings will grow into trees approximately 65' tall and 35' wide with glossy green leaves and densely branched canopies that create important nesting sites and shelter throughout the year for many songbird species.

In addition, pin oaks feed hundreds of kinds of caterpillars, which in turn feed the baby chicks of native birds. Ducks love their small acorns too. Pin oaks are an important native species in many wildlife habitats across North America, and are treasured for both their environmental services and beauty.

Pin Oak Seedlings for Sale: A Future Investment

Every pin oak seedling planted is an investment in the future. A grove of mature pin oaks can cool landscapes, filter stormwater, store carbon, and produce thousands of acorns that sustain wildlife year after year. As Ralph Waldo Emerson observed, “The creation of a thousand forests is in one acorn.”

This plant ships bare root. Pin oak is one of the easier oaks to plant, since young trees have shallow, spreading roots instead of one deep taproot. When your seedlings arrive, soak the roots for an hour or two, spread them out in the hole, and water them in well. Pin oaks like moist soil, so keep yours watered through the first summer. A tree tube will keep deer off the young shoots.

Our pin oak seedlings for sale grow in USDA zones 4 through 8 and like full sun. Clear the grass and weeds around each spot before you plant. For woodlots, wetland projects, and reforestation, space your seedlings about 10 to 12 feet apart.
