Quercus pagoda Cherrybark Oak Tree Seedlings

The cherrybark oak, or Quercus pagoda, is one of the South's most impressive oak species. Cherrybark oaks grow into magnificent native trees with towering canopies, distinctive, deeply lobed leaves, and dark, textured bark reminiscent of the black cherry for which they were named.

How Quercus pagoda Seedlings Grow and Where They Thrive

Cherrybark oak seedlings may start small, but they grow into some of the most handsome, hardy, and useful native trees in the South. These seedlings grow surprisingly fast for an oak, especially with full sun and moist, deep soils. Cherrybark trees are excellent for bottomland sites along creeks and rivers, which may occasionally flood.

Though cherrybark oaks can handle short floods from time to time, the soil should be well-drained. Spots that stay wet for long periods aren't a good fit. In one planting study, the Forest Service observed cherrybark oaks averaging approximately 14 feet tall within five years when competing vegetation was controlled. Under ideal conditions, mature trees can reach heights well over 100 feet tall and more than 50 feet wide.

Cherrybark Oak: A Faster-Growing Oak Tree

This fast-growing oak has shiny, green, pagoda-shaped leaves that change to shades of bronze, russet, yellow, and muted red, adding a final glow to the landscape before winter. Despite its name, the cherrybark oak does not produce cherries, but acorns. These acorns, or mast, are valued by a variety of wildlife, including wild turkey, squirrels, blue jays, ducks and other waterfowl, white-tailed deer, raccoons, woodpeckers, nuthatches, and even black bears.

Blue jays and squirrels are known to help "plant" some of these acorns, which aids in a natural spread of these trees over time. The tree is also an important larval host for several species of butterflies and moths, and these caterpillars provide food for many songbirds, including warblers, orioles, and tanagers.

Cherrybark Oak Seedlings for Sale: Restoration Value

Cherrybark oak seedlings offer lots of ecological and restoration benefits. For landowners looking for native oak seedlings for reforestation, they are excellent for converting former farm fields back to native hardwood forest, restoring worn-out bottomlands, and bringing back valuable oaks in harvested woodlands. Over time, these plantings can develop into productive forests that provide wildlife habitat, watershed benefits, and valuable hardwood timber.

This plant ships bare root, so plant your seedlings as soon as you can. Soak the roots in water for an hour or two. Plant them as deep as they grew before, press the soil down, and water them well. If it’s been dry, water once a week that first summer. Deer love young oaks, so a tree tube or cage helps a lot. Don’t worry if they don’t grow much the first year. They’re busy growing roots.

Our cherrybark oak seedlings for sale grow best in USDA zones 6 through 9. They need full sun, so skip shady spots. Before planting, clear away grass and weeds, because young oaks don't like the competition. For reforestation, space seedlings about 10 to 12 feet apart.

Quercus pagoda Seedlings Make Durable Wood

The wood of the cherrybark oak is highly prized for its strong, heavy, and straight-grained lumber, adding real long-term value to a seedling already worth planting. These long-lived trees are equally valued for their impressive size and beauty, their role as wildlife habitat, and their restoration potential.
