The Floating Crab, also known as the Sargasso Crab, was developed in Xcalak, Mexico, after guides observed permit feeding on crabs amongst floating Sargassum weed. Unlike a conventional crab pattern, it’s designed to float on the surface, creating a unique presentation for permit feeding high in the water.
The concept can also be applied to permit fishing in parts of Australia, particularly where big schools of permit are encountered. With multiple fish competing for food, a floating crab can create an exciting opportunity to draw an aggressive surface feed.
Permit anglers looking for something different when fish are feeding at or near the surface, particularly around floating weed or when large schools of competitive fish are encountered.
