Concord grape vines for sale here are the classic Vitis labrusca, the dark purple slip-skin grape behind grape jelly and juice. We ship them bare-root at 3 to 4 feet, in packs of 25, 50, 100 and 500, for backyard arbors, fence lines, small vineyards and wholesale buyers.
A Concord vine is a vigorous grower that sends canes 15 feet or more across a trellis in a few seasons. It's hardy in zones 4 to 8. Plant it in full sun, because that's what ripens the fruit, and in well-drained soil. Heavy, soggy ground is the one thing it won't forgive.
Clusters ripen blue-black with a dusty bloom, and the thick skin slips off the pulp. The flavor is bold and sweet-tart, the grape you know from jelly. Vines bear fruit in late summer, with harvest around September, and the leaves turn yellow in fall. Expect a first real crop in about three years.
Most people turn the crop into juice, jelly and pie, and the grapes also eat well straight off the vine, seeds and all. For other fruit that grows on vines, see our guide to fruits that grow on vines.
Give it something strong to climb: a trellis, an arbor or a wire fence, since a mature vine is heavy. Plant 8 feet apart in a row, with rows 8 to 10 feet apart. Our walkthrough of growing grape vines on a fence covers support and training.
Soak the roots for a few hours, trim any broken ones and spread the rest in a wide hole. Set the vine so the roots sit just below the soil surface, firm the soil and water well. Tie the first cane to the support right away and keep the soil damp through the first summer.
At 8 feet apart in a row, a pack of 25 vines stretches about 200 feet, 100 vines run to 800 feet and 500 vines reach 4,000. Packs of 25, 50, 100 and 500 suit a home arbor or a vineyard planting.
Grapes need a firm hand with the pruners. Cut them hard in late winter, leaving a few healthy canes, since fruit grows on new shoots from last year's wood. Birds will take their share as the clusters color, so netting helps. Concord is self-fertile, so a single vine will fruit.
A Concord vine covers an arbor in shade by summer and hangs with fruit by fall. Planted in rows with wire, the same vine becomes a small commercial block.
