The Spotted Borneo Sucker Loach (Gastromyzon punctulatus) is a fascinating freshwater fish known for its flattened body, suction-cup fins, and beautiful spotted pattern. Originating from fast-flowing mountain streams in Southeast Asia, this Borneo Loach is perfectly adapted to cling onto rocks and glass while grazing on algae and biofilm.

Native to cool, oxygen-rich streams in Borneo, this species belongs to the group commonly known as hillstream loaches. These environments are characterized by strong currents, rocky substrates, and abundant algae growth, conditions that should be replicated in the home aquarium for best results.

Unlike typical Loaches, the Borneo Sucker Loach uses its modified fins to “stick” to surfaces, allowing it to rest and feed even in strong water flow. This unique adaptation makes it one of the most interesting bottom-dwelling fish in the aquarium hobby.

A full-grown Spotted Borneo Sucker Loach typically reaches 2.5–3 inches (6–7.5 cm). Its body is flat and wide, covered in natural brown, tan, and dark spotted patterns that provide excellent camouflage against rocks and gravel. The underside features specialized suction fins, while the top view reveals a ray-like shape that instantly sets this loach apart from other freshwater fish.

The Spotted Borneo Sucker Loach is peaceful, calm, and non-aggressive, making it ideal for community aquariums with compatible tank mates. It spends most of its time grazing on surfaces and resting on rocks rather than swimming in open water. Excellent Spotted Borneo Sucker Loach tank mates include: Small peaceful fish, Danios, White Cloud Mountain Minnows, Hillstream Loaches, Corydoras catfish, shrimp, and snails. Avoid aggressive cichlids or slow, delicate fish that prefer warm, low-flow environments.
