The Roseline Shark (Sahyadria denisonii), also known as the Denison Barb or Torpedo Barb, is one of the most striking and energetic freshwater schooling fish available. Instantly recognizable by its bold red lateral stripe, silver torpedo-shaped body, and black accent markings, the Denison Barb fish brings speed, elegance, and nonstop movement to large community aquariums.

Native to the fast-flowing rivers and streams of southern India, Sahyadria denisonii naturally inhabits clear waters with strong current and high oxygen levels. This natural environment explains the Denison Barb’s athletic swimming ability and preference for open space.

Once considered rare in the aquarium trade, tank-bred Denison Barbs are now widely available and highly valued for their durability, color retention, and peaceful community behavior when kept correctly.

The full-grown Roseline Shark is one of the larger Barb species, reaching lengths of 5–6 inches (12–15 cm). Its streamlined silver body is vividly accented by a striking red stripe that runs from the snout through the mid-body, complemented by bold black markings along the lateral line and yellow and black highlights on the tail fin. Both males and females exhibit similar coloration; however, females are generally slightly larger and rounder than their male counterparts.

Despite its name, the Roseline Shark is not aggressive. It is a peaceful, fast-swimming schooling fish that must be kept in groups of 6 or more to reduce stress and showcase natural behavior. When kept singly or in small numbers, Denison Barbs may become skittish or withdrawn. Excellent Denison Barb tank mates include: Rainbowfish, larger Tetras, other Barbs, peaceful cichlids, Loaches, and Corydoras catfish. Avoid slow, long-finned fish or very small nano species that may struggle with their speed.
