The Apistogramma agassizii Double Red is one of the most striking color forms of the popular Apistogramma agassizii, prized for its intense red fins, elegant body shape, and intelligent behavior. Known as a classic dwarf cichlid, this fish combines vivid coloration with a manageable size and peaceful temperament, making it a favorite among planted tank and South American biotope enthusiasts.
Native to the Amazon River Basin, Apistogramma agassizii inhabits slow-moving, plant-rich blackwater streams with leaf litter and soft substrates. The Double Red variety is selectively bred to enhance the bright red coloration on both the dorsal and caudal fins, giving it a dramatic, eye-catching appearance unmatched by many other dwarf cichlids.
This species is well known for its complex behaviors, including territorial displays, cave spawning, and attentive brood care, traits that make Apistogramma fish fascinating to observe.
A full-grown Apistogramma agassizii Double Red reaches approximately 3–3.5 inches for males, while females remain smaller at around 2–2.5 inches. Males display elongated fins with intense red coloration extending across the dorsal and tail, often accented by metallic blues and golds. Females are more compact with warmer yellow tones and darker markings, especially when guarding eggs or fry. Their vibrant colors intensify in planted tanks with subdued lighting and stable water parameters.
The Double Red Apistogramma is a peaceful but territorial dwarf cichlid, best suited for calm community aquariums. While males establish small territories, aggression is generally limited and manageable in properly structured tanks. Ideal Apistogramma agassizii tank mates include: Tetras (rummy nose, cardinal, ember), Rasboras, Corydoras catfish, Otocinclus, Pencilfish, and peaceful dwarf gouramis. Avoid aggressive cichlids or boisterous fish that may stress this species.
