The Akari 40DL is among the wave of new Akari light sculptures designed by Isamu Noguchi in the 1960s. It features mulberry bark washi paper, with a unique formation of irregular bamboo ribbing (higo) which transitions from more evenly-spaced at its ends to more widely-spaced at its center. Its form is a distinctive hybrid, falling somewhere between Noguchi’s designs for globes and ellipsoids.
