Agoraphobia is characterized by a fear of anxiety-producing places or situations from which escape may be difficult.
Although the word "agoraphobia" means fear of an open place, this is not found in all cases.
Some people with agoraphobia can go to great lengths to avoid having panic attacks in these situations, while others find the condition intolerable and will confine themselves to their homes.
