Professor Calculus is famously depicted holding his signature pendulum because it is his chosen tool for dowsing, a method he uses to locate hidden objects, underground water, and lost treasures throughout his adventures. This iconic stance specifically references the memorable closing scenes of Red Rackham's Treasure, where Calculus uses the swinging pendulum to guide Tintin and Captain Haddock to the cellar of Marlinspike Hall. It is there, beneath the estate, that they finally discover the long-lost pirate treasure chest belonging to Sir Francis Haddock, marking a major turning point in the series and securing the future home of the Marlinspike companions.
