Each of these Kuba cloths is a one-of-a-kind piece of Central African textile art. The cloths are woven from raffia palm fibre and resist-dyed in deep black with warm ochre and cream. The bold, rhythmic patterns of rings, diamonds and chevrons come from the dye resist. The raffia weave is still clearly visible in the finished cloth.
Kuba textiles come from the Kasai region of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Traditionally the raffia is woven by men and decorated by women. Panels were sewn together for ceremonial dress, gifts and status.
Each cloth is mounted on a black board and set in a hand-finished dark frame with a thin copper-orange inner edge. It arrives ready to hang.
Please Note; some of the frames have slight scratches in the wood.
