The Melanurus Wrasse (Halichoeres melanurus), the melanurus Wrasse or Tail-spot Wrasse, is a colourful and active saltwater fish popular in marine aquariums. Here's a detailed description:

Appearance:

• Coloration: This fish is characterized by its vibrant mix of green, blue, and orange hues. The body typically features horizontal stripes ranging from bright yellow to greenish-blue.
• Fins: Its dorsal and tail fins are often adorned with intricate patterns, including small dots or stripes.
• Unique Markings: A distinctive dark spot is commonly found at the base of its tail fin, giving it its name.
• Size: It grows to a maximum length of about 4-5 inches (10-13 cm).

Habitat:

• Natural Environment: Found in shallow reefs and lagoons throughout the Indo-Pacific region, including areas like Indonesia, the Philippines, and the Great Barrier Reef.
• Behaviour in the Wild: It spends most of its time foraging among coral and rock crevices for small invertebrates.

Aquarium Care:

• Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 50 gallons is required due to its active nature and need for swimming space.
• Substrate: Prefers a sandy substrate, as it often buries itself in the sand when startled or sleeping.
• Diet: Carnivorous, feeding on various meaty foods, such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and other small invertebrates.
• Compatibility: Generally peaceful but may become territorial with other wrasses or similar-shaped fish. It can cohabitate well with other non-aggressive species in a reef tank.
• Reef-Safe: Considered reef-safe with caution, as it may prey on small crustaceans like ornamental shrimp or snails.

Behavior:

• Activity Level: Very active and constantly moving, providing dynamic energy to an aquarium.
• Social: Can be kept singly or in pairs, but males may display aggression towards one another if space is limited.

The Melanurus Wrasse is a resilient and beautiful addition to marine aquariums. It is well-suited for hobbyists looking for a fish that is both functional—due to its ability to control pests like bristle worms—and visually stunning.
