Under the wide branches of an old oak, a simple weathered bench faces the water from a leaf-strewn bank. On the far side the stone mill and its waterwheel stand among copper trees, with soft blue hills behind and a pale gold sky reflected in the pond. Red shrubs and tall reeds edge the near shore.
The empty seat is an invitation to stay awhile, which makes this a good fit for a reading corner in the living room or the wall beside a bed. It sits nicely alongside The Beech Avenue and Last Light on the Path within the Autumn at the Mill collection, nine paintings of an old watermill and the woodland walks around it.
