The stream slides slowly under a low stone bridge, its single arch doubled in the dark water. A tall tree in russet leaf leans over the left bank, reeds and tawny grasses crowd the edges, and on the right a cottage with a red roof sits half hidden among green trees at the edge of a meadow. Pale cloud and a warm band of light settle over the far hills.
Gentle and balanced, it is lovely over a bed or in a dining room hung with other quiet landscapes. It looks lovely beside The Millrace and The Woodland Edge, two more views from the Autumn at the Mill collection, nine paintings that follow an old watermill, its stream and its woods.
