Tall trunks with smooth gray bark stand on either side of a winding path, the largest leaning in from the left with its roots gripping the bank. Copper and russet leaves fill the canopy and carpet the ground, while ahead the trees part onto a pale, hazy clearing. The light is muted and even, and the far opening glows faintly through a thin veil of autumn air.
Its muted copper and cream tones work beautifully in a study or along an entry hall, where the curving path seems to draw the eye onward. It belongs to the Autumn at the Mill collection, nine paintings of an old watermill and its surrounding woodland, and it pairs beautifully with Bench Beneath the Oak and Last Light on the Path.
