An old wooden gate, faded to a soft sage, sits closed between two whitewashed pillars at the edge of the garden. Pink roses climb the wall on the left and a clump of lavender softens the corner, while the sandy path in front lies in dappled sun. Over the top of the gate, green countryside, cypresses and low hills hint at what lies beyond.
It makes a gentle welcome in an entryway, and it reads just as well in a home office where a quieter view is wanted. One of nine paintings of a country stone house and its garden in the French Country Light collection, The Rose Gate pairs with The Shaded Terrace and The Flowering Steps.
