When trolling and dragging planers, try fishing two rods at staggered distances. Always keep the boat moving forward.
All planers have a critical point where if you're trolling them too fast, they will "trip" and come to the surface. So remember, too high of a trolling speed will make the planer trip and you will have to reel it in and re-set.
You can troll with mackerel or swimming plugs when fishing with a planer. Use the smaller planers for low-speed trolling with small lures, and the larger ones for faster speeds and larger lures. Downrigger planers use the force of the water to take your trolling lines deeper. Heavy lead downrigger weights only rely on gravity. When trolling and dragging planers, try fishing two rods at staggered distances. Always keep the boat moving forward.
