André 3000's silence after *Speakerboxx/The Love Below* became one of hip-hop's most mythologized mysteries, with fans waiting nearly two decades for new music. When *New Blue Sun* finally arrived in 2023, it wasn't the rap album anyone expected; it was 87 minutes of flute-centered ambient and new age improvisation, recorded with a cast that includes Carlos Niño and Surya Botofasina. The departure stunned some and moved others deeply, but it was entirely consistent with an artist who has always refused the obvious move.
