The Wolfgang Press occupied a singular space in the 4AD universe, threading post-punk austerity through funk, gospel, and deep electronic grooves in ways that confounded easy categorization. *Asylum Variations* collects and reworks material from their catalog, making it an ideal entry point for listeners who came to their sound through later devotees or the broader 4AD lineage. Dark, sensual, and rhythmically hypnotic, their work has aged remarkably well.
