Recorded at Sonic Pump Studios in Helsinki, Tears on Tape leaned harder into the band's metal roots than much of their previous work, with Ville Valo and producer Mige Amorous stripping the sound back to something rawer and more direct. For a band that spent two decades perfecting the blend of gothic atmosphere and rock hooks they called "love metal," it stands as a fitting close to the chapter.
