Striped Jasper Zebra with Monkey by Andreas von Zadora-Gerlof
Zebra with Monkey on Back
Andreas von Zadora-Gerlof
Late 20th Century
This striped jasper zebra carries a mischievous monkey on its back. The sculpture is the work of Andreas von Zadora-Gerlof, the celebrated Canadian-born jeweler and sculptor known for bringing wit, luxury and technical brilliance to hardstone carving. Zadora’s choice of striped jasper is especially inspired, as the stone’s natural black-and-white banding perfectly evokes the bold patterning of the zebra’s coat.
The rearing zebra gives the sculpture a lively sense of movement, while the monkey clinging to its back adds humor and narrative appeal. Finely carved details, from the textured mane to the expressive animal features, reveal the lapidary mastery that has made Zadora one of the foremost gemstone artists of the modern era, known as “America’s Fabergé.”
