Nelumbo nucifera 'Lei Bing' (雷冰), bowl lotus, shipped as a dormant lotus tuber.
Lei Bing is a very small bowl lotus with a lot of color. The flowers open a rich, brilliant red to deep crimson, sharp against the fresh green leaves.
The shape is simple: broad, smooth, rounded petals around a golden-yellow seedpod and fine golden-orange stamens. As the flower opens, the petals spread to show the center and keep their full red color.
Because the plant stays so small, you see it up close, and that's where the petal texture and gold center show best.
As a bowl lotus, this one settles at 2 to 12 inches of water over the crown once established. Start a new tuber under 2 to 4 inches and raise the level as it pushes aerial leaves, with the growing tip left uncovered. Pot size, soil and the rest of the method are in the lotus planting instructions.
