Nelumbo nucifera 'Joker', medium lotus, shipped as a dormant lotus tuber.

Joker is a rare collector's lotus, and you won't mistake it for any other variety. Each petal carries its own mix of deep raspberry, magenta, rose pink, cream and warm yellow, laid on in streaks, patches and washes that look painted by hand.

The outer petals hold the boldest pink and crimson. Toward the center the petals get lighter and more patterned, and no two blooms come out the same. Some petals are mostly pink, others split between cream and magenta. The golden-yellow center peeks out from the middle of a rounded, cupped flower.

Even the leaves get in on it. They're variegated in several shades of green.

As a medium lotus, this one settles at 6 to 18 inches of water over the crown once established. Start a new tuber under 2 to 4 inches and raise the level as it pushes aerial leaves, with the growing tip left uncovered.
