Viola bears large black currants with a comparatively sweet flavour when fully ripe. Grower descriptions note a mild grape impression and seeds that are less noticeable when eating the fruit fresh.

Its reported midsummer crop offers a useful contrast with sharper flavoured black currants grown mainly for preserves. Those flavour comparisons describe fully ripe fruit; local weather and harvest timing affect sweetness.
