A needlepoint throw pillow: the Tinsel Tangle Ebb design. Thousands of small diagonal stitches hold the color and the detail for decades.

Good on a bench, a window seat, or the end of a bed. It layers well with a hooked piece or plain velvet, and repeating one of its colors pulls a sofa together.

Don't Get Your Tinsel In A Tangle reads in red across a cream needlepoint center, boxed in by a border of candy, ornaments and stripes on green. A red welt edges the whole thing. A joke pillow that still has enough border work to look considered.

Every square inch of the canvas is covered, which is why a needlepoint piece holds its color and its shape for years. Seasonal designs are made in limited runs: once a Christmas design sells through it is usually gone until next year. A thoughtful gift for a Christmas host, a newlywed couple, or a family collection that grows every year.
