Growing method and how it works?

The WALLY32 uses the SWC (Shallow Water Culture) method, an efficient and reliable hydroponic technique. In this system, water from the reservoir is pumped into the top channel, filling it to a shallow level of approximately 1.18 inches (three centimeters). Once this level is reached, the water drains sequentially into the lower channels, ultimately returning to the reservoir. This creates a continuous cycle of nutrient-rich water flowing through the system.

Plants are placed in net cups within the planting holes on the channel covers. Their roots grow into the channels, accessing water, nutrients, and oxygen directly, while the foliage, fruits, and leaves grow in the external environment.

The nutrient solution, prepared by diluting hydroponic fertilizers in the reservoir, circulates twenty-four/seven. The system can also run on a timer, allowing growers flexibility to pause operation at night or when using solar panels during daylight hours. Unlike the NFT (Nutrient Film Technique) method, where water drains entirely back to the reservoir when the pump stops, the SWC system retains a water level in the channels. This feature provides a safety net during power outages or pump failures, ensuring plants do not dry out and remain healthy.

The SWC method offers a reliable and straightforward solution for growing plants hydroponically, delivering all essential nutrients, water, and oxygen directly to the roots while maintaining a consistent environment for optimal growth.

How WALLY32 Works?

WALLY32 utilizes the vertical hydroponic Shallow Water Culture (SWC) method, where a nutrient solution reservoir at the bottom feeds water and nutrients to plants in the channels. The roots absorb water, nutrients, and oxygen, while the foliage receives light and airflow from the external environment.

Unlike the more common NFT method, SWC maintains a safe water level even if the pump fails or during power outages, protecting plants from drying out quickly. WALLY32 can also be operated on a timer or solar panel if needed.

Like other hydroponic methods, WALLY32 conserves about 90% of water and allows plants to grow up to three times faster without chemical pesticides.

Questions & Answers

What is the SWC method?

The Shallow Water Culture (SWC) method is a hydroponic technique where a shallow layer of nutrient-rich water continuously circulates through the growing channels. This ensures plants receive a constant supply of water, nutrients, and oxygen directly to their roots, promoting fast and efficient growth. Unlike traditional gardening, SWC conserves up to 90% more water by recirculating it in a closed loop, and its shallow water level provides added security by keeping plants hydrated even during pump failures or power outages. This makes it a reliable and water-efficient method for hydroponic growing.

What are the basic conditions needed for growing with WALLY32?

To grow successfully with the WALLY32, you need the following basic conditions:

Suitable Vertical Surface: A strong and sturdy vertical surface for securely mounting the system.

Sufficient Light:

For herbs and leafy greens: At least three hours of direct sunlight or sufficient artificial grow lights.
For fruiting vegetables: At least five hours of direct sunlight or sufficient artificial grow lights.

Reliable Power Source: A nearby and consistent power source to run the system's pump.

Airflow and Temperature: Proper ventilation and a suitable temperature for plant growth. Specific temperature requirements can vary based on the plant type. Use the provided plant encyclopedia to check the specific growing conditions for each plant you want to grow.

These basic conditions ensure a productive and hassle-free experience with the WALLY32.

Can WALLY32 be placed indoors?

Yes, the WALLY32 can be placed indoors and is ideal for indoor use, as it requires minimal space. However, growers need to ensure adequate light, airflow, and humidity for healthy plant growth. To support indoor growing, NatureTech offers a professional artificial light kit specifically designed for the WALLY32. This kit provides optimal lighting for herbs, leafy greens, and some fruiting vegetables, and can be easily placed above each channel.

What else will I need to grow hydroponically?

To grow hydroponically with the WALLY32, you’ll need the following additional items:

Hydroponic Fertilizer: A balanced mineral fertilizer containing all the essential macro and micronutrients required for the plants' entire growth cycle.
EC Meter: To monitor the electrical conductivity and ensure proper nutrient levels in the water.
pH Meter: To measure the pH of the nutrient solution for optimal plant absorption.
pH Adjustment Solutions: pH Up and pH Down solutions to balance the pH after adding fertilizer to the water.

How do I know what can I grow?

What you can grow with the WALLY32 depends on the light available:

Fruiting Vegetables: Require more than five hours of direct sunlight or strong artificial grow lights.
Herbs and Leafy Greens: Need at least three hours of direct sunlight or adequate artificial light.
No Direct Light: If you lack natural light, you’ll need artificial grow lights to support your plants.

By ensuring the right lighting conditions, you can grow a variety of fresh, healthy produce with ease.

What is the ongoing maintenance?

Ongoing maintenance for the WALLY32 is simple and adaptable to your needs:

Reservoir Refilling: This is done as needed, typically once a week or every two to three weeks. If connected to a water tap using the float valve, refilling happens automatically.
Fertilizing: After refilling the reservoir with fresh water, dilute a small amount of concentrated fertilizer into the water following the included guide.
pH Balancing: Check the pH of the nutrient solution and adjust it as needed to keep it within the optimal range.
Pump Filter Cleaning: Clean the pump’s filter once a month to ensure smooth operation.
