A beautiful native perennial that blooms continuously spring through early fall
Pink Milkweed, also know as Swamp Milkweed or Marsh Milkweed, this lovely herbaceous perennial plant is a must-have for flower gardeners. If you want to turn your backyard into a prime stop for Monarch butterflies and other pollinators, this is the plant for we'd recommend for you. Don't let the alternative name "Swamp" fool you, though, this Milkweed is adaptable to many environments and thrives in most landscapes across the United States.
Two things gardeners love about it. First, it holds its ground. Common milkweed travels by underground runners and shows up three beds over, while pink milkweed forms a tidy clump on a deep taproot and stays put for years. Second, it wakes up late in spring, well after the last frost has come and gone, so the tender new growth never gets burned. Just leave a marker by it in fall and you'll know right where to look.
Swamp milkweed gets its name for it ability to grow in water-rich environments. Plant them in a rain garden or near a body of water like a pond or lake and they'll be right at home. That being said, they're perfectly content in a traditional garden bed as well. Their perseverance in a variety of soil conditions is what makes them such as great herbaceous perennial for both experts and novice gardeners alike. Asclepias incarnata don't need much to grow happy and healthy:
