This Dracula soil vial necklace holds earth from the foot of the outer wall of Cetatea Poenari. A hand-crafted vial with a cap hangs from an 18 in chain.
The vial holds Cetatea Poenari soil from Vlad III's cliffside fortress. Wallachians built the fortress, and Vlad III ordered it rebuilt in the 15th century. Earthquakes in the 20th century damaged it.
The necklace nods to the vampire soil myth. It says a vampire must sleep on the soil of its home. Stoker used the idea in his 1897 novel.
Vlad III ruled Wallachia three times, in 1448, from 1456 to 1462, and in 1476. Historians debate whether he was crueler than other rulers of his day. Stoker never visited Transylvania, and he knew little of Vlad. See more in our Authentic Historical Artifacts.
Wear it gently, since a vial is more delicate than a plain pendant. Keep the box-style chain dry. Store the necklace in its black box when you are not wearing it.
Few pieces of jewelry carry real earth from a famous ruin. The vampire soil myth gives the piece its story. Your Dracula soil vial necklace pairs that story with soil from a fortress you can still visit.
