This engaging, informative, and richly illustrated introduction to George Washington's landscape at Mount Vernon contains essays by Adam T. Erby, Mount Vernon Assistant Curator; J. Dean Norton, Director of Horticulture; and Esther White, Director of Historic Preservation and Outreach. The essays cover Washington's critical role in developing Mount Vernon's landscape, the evolution of the landscape and recreated gardens, and an explanation of the groundbreaking archaeological methods which facilitated the discovery of Washington-era garden beds and borders of flowers, shrubs, and vegetables in his upper garden.
This book will appeal to many readers - from students of American history and culture to gardening enthusiasts to Mount Vernon visitors curious to learn how the modern day archaeological finds have yielded one of the most significant eighteenth-century garden recreations of our time.
