If you spin at guild meetings, retreats, and on the porch as often as you do at home, the Kromski Sonata Encore is the traveling wheel that doesn't ask you to give anything up. It folds down and slips into its carry bag, then opens to a full 19" (50 cm) drive wheel, a taller orifice, and a smooth double-treadle rhythm that feels like a full-size wheel under your feet.
The Encore is the updated Sonata: the traditional flyer head has been replaced with a magnetic head, so bobbin changes take seconds instead of fiddling, and you can now spin in double drive as well as scotch tension. Sliding hooks let you draft chunky, lofty singles without stopping to move yarn along, and swapping whorls changes your ratio when you want more twist or a gentler take-up. Sealed ball bearings at the hub and brass bearings on the treadles keep it quiet and steady; hushed plastic bearings in the bobbins keep the whole thing gentle enough to spin while you listen to something else. Choose Unfinished to oil or stain it yourself, or Finished Clear, Walnut, or Mahogany for classic Old World warmth out of the box.
Made by Kromski. Oil the bearings and orifice regularly with the included wheel oil, and wipe the wood with a dry cloth.
