The Patek Philippe reference 570 occupies a particularly important place within the history of the Calatrava. Introduced as a larger counterpart to the celebrated reference 96, its approximately 35mm case gave Patek Philippes restrained Bauhaus-influenced design language greater presence on the wrist, while preserving the purity that made the Calatrava such an enduring archetype. Even today, the proportions of the 570 feel remarkably contemporary.
This example is especially compelling for the condition and character of its yellow-gold case. Rather than the bright, uniform appearance of freshly polished gold, the surface has developed a deep, mottled tarnish and warm patina accumulated naturally over time. The effect is particularly beautiful along the case flanks and lugs, where subtle shifts in tone emphasize the architecture of the case. It is precisely the sort of honest aging that is increasingly difficult to find, giving the watch a distinctly individual presence without detracting from the essential simplicity of the design.
The silver dial is classically restrained, with applied gold indexes, slender hands and subsidiary seconds at six oclock, allowing the proportions of the 570 to speak for themselves. Housed within is a manual-winding movement, while the watch is completed by a black strap and Patek Philippe buckle.
Adding another layer of interest is the engraving to the caseback, identifying the watch as a presentation piece from Industrias Unidas, S.A., or IUSA. Founded in El Salvador in 1955, IUSA became one of the regions significant textile manufacturers, making the engraving an unusually evocative piece of corporate and Central American history. More than simply a fine vintage Calatrava, this 570 retains the physical traces of both its age and its original life, qualities that make it especially appealing to collectors who value provenance and honest preservation.
