Among Patek Philippes vintage chronographs, the reference 1579 is distinguished by one of the manufactures most expressive case designs. Introduced in the 1940s and produced until the mid-1960s, its 36mm case was unusually large for the period and is immediately recognizable by its dramatic, multi-faceted spider lugs. The angularity of the case gives the 1579 a presence quite unlike the more restrained references 130 and 533.
This example was manufactured in 1961, placing it among the later examples of the reference. Its silvered dial follows the second-series configuration, with applied yellow-gold Arabic numerals at twelve and six, faceted pyramidal hour markers, twin recessed registers and an outer tachymeter scale. Leaf-shaped gold hands are joined by a blued chronograph seconds hand, creating a particularly balanced and classical composition.
The yellow-gold case retains the sculptural character for which the reference is celebrated, with sharply defined, faceted lugs and rectangular chronograph pushers. Particularly interesting are the French owl import hallmarks, indicating that the watch was imported into Francea subtle detail that adds another layer to its history.
Powered by Patek Philippes manually wound calibre 13-130, the reference 1579 belongs to the celebrated family of mid-century chronographs built around the Valjoux 13-ligne architecture and extensively finished by Patek Philippe. Production was limited, with scholarship generally estimating only a few hundred examples across all metals.
Accompanied by a Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives confirming manufacture in 1961, this is a beautifully preserved late example of one of the manufactures most distinctive vintage chronographs, combining the bold architecture of its spider lugs with an unusually elegant and well-balanced dial.
