Bashful is a lace beanie with just the right amount of sparkle. Lace panels sit between neat baby cable columns, rising from a ribbed brim all the way into the crown. You'll knit it from the bottom up in the round in DK yarn, following written and charted instructions, with video tutorials to back you up. Rated adventurous beginner, it's a friendly first step into lace knitting.
Cast on with the long-tail method and knit a 1x1 ribbed brim in the round. A single increase round gets your stitches ready for the lace, and then the lace and baby cable pattern takes over for the body. At the crown, each lace panel narrows while the cables continue up, and you'll switch to double-pointed needles as the stitch count drops. Close the top drawstring style, wet block, and watch the lace bloom.
This is the lace hat that makes you feel like a lace knitter. The motif becomes easy to read in your stitches, the rest rounds give your brain a break, and the finished result looks polished and special. It's also very hard to knit just one.
Three sizes make it easy to knit a set for friends and family or build up a stash of handmade gifts.
Working in the round, 1x1 ribbing, kfb increases, yarn overs, s2kp, ssk, k2tog, p2tog, s3k2tog, baby cables, chart reading, double-pointed needles, drawstring closure, and wet blocking.
This is a digital PDF pattern delivered as an instant download. Nothing ships. Written in standard US knitting terms.
What skill level is the Bashful Hat?
It's rated adventurous beginner. If you can knit and purl in the round, you're ready. The videos cover the cast-on, lace knitting, and lifelines.
Are there charts?
Yes. Charts are linked for the lace and the crown, and everything is written out as well.
How much yarn does it take?
1 (2, 2) skeins of Universal Yarns Eden Silk at 153 yds / 140 m each.
What needles do I need?
A US 8 [5 mm] 16" circular needle for the brim and body, and double-pointed needles for the crown.
My lace looks tiny before blocking. Is that normal?
Totally normal. Blocking opens the lace: 15 stitches measure 2½" before and 3" after. Block your swatch before you check gauge.
