One ball. Four sizes. All the cozy texture. The Toasted Marshmallow Crochet Hat is a shell stitch beanie pattern sized from Baby to Adult M/L, and every single size works up from one ball of worsted weight yarn. It's written for Adventurous Beginners, with video tutorials and a stitch diagram to guide you through each new stitch.
This hat starts sideways. You crochet the brim in short back loop rows until it's long enough to wrap the head, then switch to the larger hook and pick up single crochets evenly along its edge to begin working in the round. From there, the body grows in textured bands: X-stitches, shells, and single crochet rounds, each band closed off with a round of shallow back post single crochet. The crown shapes itself with decreases worked right into the stitch pattern. Sew the top closed, seam the brim, and finish with a pom pom or leather tag if you like.
It's a small project with a big payoff. The texture looks far more involved than it is, the one-ball yardage keeps things budget friendly, and the sizing means you can make one for yourself and still have plenty of people left to gift. Honestly, the hardest part is choosing a color.
From the littlest heads to grownups, this one pattern handles matching family hats, holiday gifting, and everything in between.
Skill level: Adventurous Beginner. You'll work back loop single crochet, pick up stitches along a row edge, and practice shell stitch, X-stitch front and back, stacked double crochet, shallow back post single crochet, and sc2tog and dc2tog decreases.
This is a digital PDF pattern download, not a finished hat. Written in standard US crochet terms.
How much yarn do I need?
One ball of Red Heart Soft (256 yds / 234 m) for any of the four sizes.
Are there videos to help?
Yes. The pattern links to four tutorials: Stacked Double Crochet, Shallow Post Stitches, How to Bury Ends, and a Stitch Pattern Tutorial.
Do I have to use the stacked double crochet?
Nope. The pattern notes that you can chain 3 instead.
How do I keep the brim from stretching out over time?
The pattern includes optional elastic reinforcement: weave thin elastic thread through the inside of the brim, adjust for fit, and tie it off.
