The crown has room for actual hair — not a lot, but enough that you are not wearing a beanie pretending to be a hat. Five colors because we could not pick one, and we figured you could not either.

What it's like to wear

The fabric is cotton-dominant. It breathes. It doesn't make your head boil in the summer, which is the only test a hat has to pass to stay in our catalog. The brim is wide enough to throw shade on your face and the back of your neck. The crown has room for actual hair — not a lot, but enough that you're not wearing a beanie pretending to be a hat.

What it's like to live with

• Cotton-dominant fabric. Soft, breathable, machine-washable on cold.
• Wide brim, dome crown. Brim shades face and neck. Crown covers head. It's a hat. It covers a head.
• One size with an internal adjuster. Drawstring inside the band. Fits most heads. If your head is outside the 56-60cm range, the Foldaway has an extended fit.
• Packs flat. Rolls up, shoves in a tote, comes out looking like a hat again. We tested this in a suitcase.

The Logistics

It's a cotton hat. It will get wet in heavy rain and take a while to dry. It's a sun hat, not a rain hat. The Foldaway is the better choice if you need water resistance.
