Before a guest had said a word, the sweets were already out — and the dish they sat in mattered. This is one of those: a footed brass oval pierced into lace, an engraved bunch of flowers at its heart.

It's worked in brass by hand, the body pierced into floral openwork, two scrolled handles at the sides, the oval centre engraved and raised on a foot. Fill it with mithai, dry fruit or paan when people come, or stand it on a console for the cutwork alone.
