There's a kind of bowl that sits out whether or not there's anything in it — the one that finishes a shelf or a console on its own. Pierced in openwork brass and set with two semi-precious stones, this is that bowl.

It's made by hand in Lahore, the sides cut into open patternwork so light passes through, raised on a tall foot that gives it presence, then silver-plated. Fill it with potpourri, fruit, or a few flowers — or leave it empty, which it carries just as well. A considered gift, and a quiet centrepiece.
