Chick Charms® Giant Pink Sapphire™ (PPAF) features oversized rosettes with vibrant pink centers edged in soft green, bringing bold color to the classic hens-and-chicks look. As it grows, this cold-hardy Sempervivum produces offsets that gradually form a dense, jewel-toned cluster. Its striking color and tidy rosette shape make it a standout choice for rock gardens, containers, and sunny borders, adding lasting texture and interest to dry garden spaces.
Hens & Chicks thrive with plenty of outdoor sunlight, which helps them develop their best colors and maintain their tight rosette form. Plant them in gritty, well-draining soil and containers with drainage holes. As they grow, they produce small offsets, or “chicks," on stolons that can be left to create fuller clusters or gently removed for sharing and transplanting.
Sempervivum grows most actively in spring and summer and appreciates regular watering during the growing season. In hotter climates, a little afternoon shade can help protect them when temperatures climb above 80°F. These hardy plants are extremely cold tolerant and can easily overwinter outdoors, often thriving beneath a protective blanket of snow. Be sure to protect them from heavy rain or standing water, which can lead to rot.
